The Cavelier King Charles Spaniel
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small breed of the ever popular Spaniel breed, it is also considered to be grouped in with the Toy dogs. That may give you an idea how small it is, but it should be noted that of all the toy dogs, the adult king Charles spaniel is the largest. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, like many other spaniels, has a somewhat longer silky coat, with a slight curl or wave and the signature long ears. There are four colors consisting of blenheim, tricolor, black and tan and Ruby. Their height ranges from 12-13 in (35-43 cm) and can weigh anywhere from 10-25 pounds (4.5-8.5 Kg).
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel got its start in the twentieth century, though you can trace it back to the King Charles Spaniel that was around during the restoration. Most of the time you will see this breed in England, which is where this breed originated. It was named after King Charles II because it favored the dog of his childhood. Unlike other spaniels, an adult king charles spaniel has a full grown tail and similar to the rest of its coat the tail hair is also moderately long. The regal way that they walk may also have something to do with its royal name as well.
The adult king charles spaniel has characteristics that make them popular and desired by many. They are affectionate, loyal, and playful and prefer their role as lapdogs. Because of this, they adapt easily to new environments and are typically good with children and families. A result of the friendly demeanor may be that they need a good amount of attention and socialization, but with their outgoing temperament this should not be a problem. The adult king charles spaniel also has some interesting qualities that may set it apart from other spaniels as well as other toy dogs. They have been known to resemble some of the same qualities as cats. They may climb and perch themselves in high places in your house or you may find them cleaning their paws as a cat does. Small animals, like birds or squirrels may be in some danger around them because on random occasions they have been known to chase and kill. This is most likely due to the Spaniels history of hunting.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a clean history within the Spaniel breed. An adult king charles spaniel is a loving, friendly dog that adjusts to just about any family or personality. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel could very possibly be the perfect dog for you or someone you know.
